AccessoriesTripodsWhat are they?
A tripod is used in photography when the photographer thinks that it is necessary for the camera to be elevated, or to minimise camera shake. It also can be used so that the Photographer has the ability to use a timer function so that they can take a photo without pressing the button. You also have the ability to take steady long exposures, as the key to taking good long exposures is the camera being in the same place. lensesLenses are the extension from the camera body. They come in different sizes, prices and focal ranges and determine how much you can zoom in on a picture. Having a lens is completely necessary in photography as without one, you cannot use a DSLR. There are many components to lenses, lots of features, key differences and the price ranges are very different from each other. Picking the right lens for you can be challenging, but with this guide you should have no problem!
Different lenses There are hundreds of different lenses out there, all with different focal lengths, and zoom abilities. Most of the time, it varies between Nikon, Canon, Sigma, Sony and Pentax, but we will be focusing on Canon and Nikon. Before we introduce anything, there is one key thing that you must know. A common mistake with lenses is the fact that people think that the bigger the zoom range (e.g. 100-400mm) the more expensive the lens will be. This is completely incorrect. Sure, some telephoto lenses are often very expensive, but that is because the quality of the lenses are extraordinary. The smaller f-stop number the lens has, the more expensive it will be. The f-stop number is in the title, for an example, Nikon AF-S 28-300mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR. "F/3.5-5.6G". From the aperture section, the lower the f number, the wider the aperture hole, which means the blurrier the background will be and the more compatible and easier it will take pictures in nighttime and low light situations. F/3.5 is a very large aperture hole, so you will find that the lower the number is, on any lens, the more expensive the lens will be, regardless of the zoom range or type of lens itself. The higher the number, the more inexpensive it will be. There are 5 main types of lenses: telephoto, zoom, prime, macro, and wide angle lens. Starting off with telephoto lens. A telephoto lens is a lens of which is usually more than 150mm in magnification. It magnifies a lot, making the image appear larger and has the ability to take pictures of something very far away. An example of this type of lens is the Canon 600mm lens, and the Nikon 300mm lens. Both of these are classified as telephoto because they can both magnify a lot. Telephoto lenses can be used for wildlife, portraits, and bird photography, as all of these require a lens capable of zooming in a lot. Zoom lenses are lenses allowing a camera to change smoothly from a long shot to a close-up or vice versa by varying the focal length. This means that you can change the focal length depending on the range of zoom your lens is capable of. 18-55mm lens is the common zoom lens length that Canon and Nikon share. This means that you can choose what focal length you would like. Other examples of this are the Nikon 55-200mm lens, and the Canon 55-250mm lens. These are classified as zoom lenses because they can change zoom lengths, in Nikon’s case, from 55mm - 200mm, and for Canon, 55mm - 250mm. The next lens is the prime lenses. These lenses are a fixed focal lengths and cannot zoom in or out anymore than the lens is entitled to. These lenses are perfect for portraiture as they tend to have a low f-stop number (i.e. f/1.8). This brings out great quality photographs, with a wide aperture hole and blurry background. It also will be at the perfect zoom length. An example of this lens is the Canon 50mm lens. It has an aperture of f/1.8. Another lens is the macro lens. A macro lens is simply a specialised type of lens that allows you to capture and focus on a very tiny image, and make it appear larger. It is best used to take photographs of small objects, wildlife or scenery. For instance, a small toadstool, a ladybird, or dew on grass. Macro lenses are usually quite expensive because they mostly have a very wide aperture hole, which increases quality and makes the background blurrier. An example of a macro lens is the Nikon 105mm macro lens. This has an aperture of f/2.8, which is a very large opening. Lastly, wide angle lenses. These lenses are used mostly for landscapes, whether it be of a beach, mountainside or something of the sort. This type of lens deliberately captures all the surroundings to touch the sensor in some way so everything in your field of view gets photographed. An example of a wide angle lens is the Canon 10-18mm lens. It isn’t zoomed in very much, which is perfect for getting the whole picture in focus and in view. Wide angle lenses are popular in travel photography and sceneries. |
